An effort to disqualify former President Donald Trump’s White House bid is being undertaken by two civil rights groups that say the Jan. 6 Capitol riot could prevent Trump from holding office under the 14th Amendment.

Mi Familia Vota, a nonprofit organization to unite the Latino community, and Free Speech For People, an advocacy group pushing for political equality, have joined forces to create the “Trump is Disqualified” campaign. The campaign aims to inform voters and state officials of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

This section bars people from holding certain offices who have previously taken an oath to uphold the Constitution and have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

The groups are pushing efforts across the nation to bar Trump from appearing on the 2024 ballot next November, urging secretaries of state and chief election officials through letters to use what is known as the insurrectionist disqualification clause of the 14th Amendment to block Trump from “any future ballot,” according to Free Speech For People.

The groups are expected to hold a series of rallies and events starting Sunday outside the offices of the secretaries of state of California, Oregon, Colorado, and Georgia for their campaign, according to the Hill.

Last month, the groups issued a letter to Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar pushing the notion that the current GOP front-runner is constitutionally ineligible to make another bid for the White House.

“Allowing a known insurrectionist to appear on the ballot is inconsistent with your obligation and oath of office to support the U.S. Constitution,” the letter reads. It emphasized that states don’t need permission from Congress to enforce the Constitution.

Other organizations have examined the use of the 14th Amendment concerning those involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The Project On Government Oversight issued a report in November 2022 that concluded the House Jan. 6 committee has evidence needed to trigger Section 3.

The report said evidence presented to the committee showed “the involvement of the former president, several members of Congress, and scores of other individuals who are covered by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, in a coordinated effort to overturn the election. Some of this evidence points to planning an act of insurrection against the U.S. government, which would squarely trigger disqualification under Section 3.”
