The mayor of a city on metro Atlanta’s southern side was arrested, charged, and released Saturday.
Khalid Kamau, South Fulton’s mayor since 2021, was charged with criminal trespass and first-degree burglary. Kamau was found in a house along Cascade Palmetto Highway by the homeowner, who, according to local news outlet WSB-TV, allegedly held Kamau at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police released Kamau on an $11,000 bond. Kamau told police he was interested in purchasing the home, and that’s why he entered it before 7:00 a.m., per the police report.
“Hey y’all i’m good. i’m free,” Kamau wrote on Facebook alongside a graphic of the Bible verse Matthew 5:10. “God is still using me. Stay tuned.”
South Fulton issued a statement Sunday to address “the concerns raised” in light of the “recent allegations involving Mayor Khalid Kamau.”
“The mayor has returned home, and we anticipate his return to service for the city,” the statement read. “We kindly request that you keep the mayor, council, and the entire city in your thoughts and prayers.”
“The city of South Fulton is focused on serving our community,” interim City Manager Sharon D. Subadan said in a statement. “We will continue to ensure that our operations are conducted with the highest standards.”
