Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) attempted to put out fires caused by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and his comments on white nationalism Tuesday. McConnell condemned white supremacy as “unacceptable.”
“White supremacy is simply unacceptable in the military and in our whole country,” he said to reporters when asked about Tuberville’s latest controversial comments.

Tuberville caused a stir on Monday night after saying that he rejected racism but is “totally against” Democrats saying that white nationalists are racist. He said earlier this year that he considers white nationalists who are serving in the military “Americans.”
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines white nationalists as “one of a group of militant white people who espouse white supremacy and advocate enforced racial segregation.”
Tuberville argued that the definition of white nationalism is “some people’s opinion,” and he said that Democrats use the term to push “identity politics.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) admonished Tuberville for his comments on the Senate floor on Tuesday.
“For the senator from Alabama to obscure the racist nature of white nationalism is indeed very, very dangerous,” Schumer said. “He is fanning the flames of bigotry and intolerance.”
