Special counsel Jack Smith’s office contacted Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) this week in relation to the investigation of former President Donald Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn 2020 election results.

“I can confirm our office has been contacted by Jack Smith’s office, but we will decline to comment further at this time,” Andrew Isenhour, a spokesperson for the governor said in a statement to the Washington Examiner on Saturday.

Trump is currently the subject of a federal investigation gearing up for a possible third indictment for alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Following initial state election results, Trump asked Kemp to call a special session of the state legislature to overturn President Joe Biden’s win in Georgia. Trump also asked Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in January 2021 to “find 11,780 votes.”

The current Republican front-runner was also the subject of a separate investigation brought on by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Kemp testified last year in the grand jury, which does not have indictment powers. The investigation issued a report that recommended multiple legal actions and concluded, against Trump’s claims, there was no widespread voter fraud.

Kemp has condemned the investigation into Trump’s alleged tampering with state presidential election results and said the investigation is a “distraction” from the Biden administration’s record.

“This is a distraction from us being focused on Joe Biden’s record and talking about the disaster of the border, disastrous pull out of Afghanistan,” Kemp said following Trump revealing he received a target letter.

Trump received a letter Sunday from Smith, claiming he is a target of the Justice Department’s investigation into possible 2020 election interference, announcing the document on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Tuesday. Target letters are issued as official correspondence from prosecutors to individuals under investigation.
