Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) fired back against lawmakers urging an investigation into Florida‘s new black history curriculum, led by the Congressional Black Caucus.

“This is just the latest — and absurd — example of the weaponization of the federal government,” DeSantis said Saturday.

LINCOLN DINNER: THE WINNERS AND LOSERS OF THE IOWA FUNDRAISER

Several members of the caucus pushed the White House, Justice Department, and the Department of Education this week to adopt a legal strategy to examine whether or not the state is violating discrimination law. Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV) told reporters on Thursday he met with Education Secretary Miguel Cardona this week to talk about legal paths to uphold the law, although no specifics were publicized.

“Standing up the lies of people like Kamala Harris is the right thing to do. We will defend Florida and stand firm against false, politically-driven narratives,” DeSantis said. “As President, I will end the weaponization of government and hold partisan bureaucrats accountable for abusing their power.”

Vice President Kamala Harris and DeSantis have been feuding over Florida’s new curriculum for black history, championed by the governor.

The Florida Board of Education voted unanimously last week to update standards for teaching black history, which includes instruction on how slaves benefited from skills they learned.

DeSantis dug into Harris again while speaking at the Iowa GOP’s annual Lincoln Dinner on Friday evening, accusing the vice president of spreading a “phony narrative” about Florida’s education standards.

Harris spoke to a crowd in Florida following the new guidelines, saying “extremist” leaders have a national agenda by wanting “to replace history with lies, middle school students in Florida to be told that enslaved people benefited from slavery.”

DeSantis fired back ahead of Harris’s trip to the Sunshine State, saying she has to “lie about Florida’s educational standards to cover for their agenda of indoctrinating students and pushing sexual topics onto children.”
