U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe said Sunday that her favorite memory of playing U.S. soccer was “equal pay.”
Rapinoe, 38, made her comment after she missed a penalty kick on Sunday, marking an end to the United States Women’s National Team’s participation in the World Cup this year. The athlete and activist announced earlier this year in July that she will retire soon, with this World Cup marking her fourth one with the National Women’s Soccer League.

“I mean, probably equal pay chance after the final,” said Rapinoe in a video shared on social media. “And I think, you know, they were saying equal pay, but could have been saying a lot of things.”

Rapinoe added that her team had always “fought for so much more,” adding that was “the most rewarding part for me.”
The soccer player has been the subject of criticism for many conservatives regarding her views, including her support for transgender athletes competing against biological women. In July, she said she would “absolutely” support and welcome transgender athletes onto the U.S. Women’s National Team, even if said transgender athlete replaced a biological woman.

Riley Gaines, a former championship swimmer-turned-women’s sports advocate, has criticized Rapinoe’s stance for welcoming transgender athletes to women’s sports, noting that Rapinoe is “actually someone who fought for women in sports,” but by welcoming transgender athletes is “undermining her fight entirely.”
Last month, Netflix announced that it will make its next sports docu-series on the U.S. women’s World Cup team; the docu-series will feature Rapinoe.
