A spokesperson for Bronny James’s family said the cardiac arrest that caused him to collapse during a workout on July 24 was due to a congenital heart defect.

James, 18, collapsed during a practice with the University of Southern California basketball team on which he plays guard. The heart defect is not expected to keep the son of NBA star LeBron James from playing basketball, the spokesperson said.

In a statement, the family explained Bronny James has “an anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect which can and will be treated.”

“We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future,” the statement said. “We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.”

Bronny James played for Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles and is a highly favorable NBA prospect, ranking 20th in the 2023 ESPN 100 rankings.

His father at the age of 38 has played 20 seasons in the NBA.
