Alabama state Rep. Wes Allen won the Republican nomination in an Alabama runoff election for secretary of state. Allen has questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election, and should he win November’s general election, he would become the state’s top elections official.
Allen defeated State Auditor Jim Zeigler in the runoff election, which was prompted when neither secured 50% of the vote in the state’s primary election last month. In that race, Zeigler won about 43% of the vote, while Allen won about 40%.

Zeigler was a member of the America First Secretary of State Coalition, a group of candidates that question the legitimacy of the 2020 election. He was also endorsed by Trump ally and election skeptic Mike Lindell, the founder of the company MyPillow.
Several other candidates from the group have won Republican nominations for the role in other states, including Jim Marchant in Nevada and Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano, who was included in the group because Pennsylvania’s governor appoints the commonwealth’s secretary of state. However, in Georgia, a state former President Donald Trump worked to overturn that was a key part of his newfound focus on down-ballot races, his chosen candidate, Rep. Jody Hice, lost a primary challenge to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who sparked the ire of Trump when he certified the state’s election results for President Joe Biden, who won the state’s 2020 election.
Zeigler told the Associated Press in an interview, “I’m not an election denier. I’m an election questioner.”
“There are many questions about the 2020 election,” Zeigler said.

Allen argued he had more experience for the role than Zeigler because he previously oversaw elections at the county level. As a legislator, he attempted to ban some voting practices the state permits, such as curbside voting.
Allen will face Democratic nominee Pamela J. Laffitte in November.
