Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young seemed unimpressed with Rep. Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-CA) deal to avoid a government shutdown.

McCarthy wrangled a 335-91 vote, sending a continuing resolution to extend the deadline for the budget another 45 days from its previous deadline of Oct. 1 to the Senate on Saturday. Senators approved the continuing resolution easily with an 88-9 vote, and President Joe Biden signed the resolution shortly before the deadline expired Sunday morning. Young appeared on ABC’s This Week Sunday and was asked if he deserves credit.

“But why? Why the brinksmanship? Why the theater? Why till the last minute?” Young responded to the question. “I will tell you, if I’m sick of it, I can only imagine what the American people are feeling.”

Young previously praised the House Speaker and his team this summer, calling them “very professional” as she was one of three lead negotiators on behalf of Biden in the talks, which produced the Fiscal Responsibility Act. Now, she was criticizing McCarthy for making 30% cuts and his desire to fire thousands of FBI agents.

“I worked in the house a long time, saw masterful speaker work under Speaker Pelosi; that’s the job of the speaker,” Young went on to say. “Put the American people before everything else. Keep your end of the bargain. Keep your end of the deal. We had a deal. I appreciate the speaker for keeping it.”

“It should not be this difficult to do what most Americans think is Congress’s basic job,” Young went on.

Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) promised on Sunday to file a motion to vacate McCarthy later this week. Gaetz cited McCarthy passing a clean resolution with House Democrats against the wishes of some of his fellow Republicans as reason enough to vacate. Young would not speculate on the possibility of the same Democratic members who worked with McCarthy turning against him to vote to vacate him.
