Taxpayers in the Peach State who received an extension on filing their income tax for 2022 have five days to file their returns to be eligible for a tax rebate of up to $500.

While most Georgia residents filed their taxes at the regular deadline in April and subsequently received their tax rebate shortly after, those in the state who were affected by severe storms earlier this year were allowed to file their taxes by Oct. 16, according to the IRS. Those taxpayers who got the extension will see their rebates once they have filed their 2022 tax returns.

To be eligible for the rebate, taxpayers must have filed their income tax returns for 2021 and 2022, had a tax liability in 2021, and be a “Georgia resident, part-year resident, or nonresident,” according to the state.

The filing status and tax liability of the taxpayer determine how much the rebate will be with different maximum amounts for single and joint filers, along with heads of households. For single filers, the rebate is worth as much as $250, and for the heads of households, it is worth as much as $375. Joint filers, meanwhile, can receive a rebate of up to $500.

“Georgia is once again in a position to issue surplus tax refunds thanks to years of responsible, conservative budgeting and because we chose to protect both lives and livelihoods during the pandemic,” Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) said in a statement about the rebate in May.

“While failed policies coming out of Washington, D.C., are pushing us closer to a recession and forcing hardworking Georgians to endure sky-high inflation, we on the state level are doing what we can to return money back where it belongs — in taxpayers’s hands,” he continued.
