President Joe Biden said Hamas attacked Israel partly in order to sabotage Israeli-Saudi normalization talks.

Biden made the remarks on Friday at a campaign fundraiser event, according to Bloomberg. Speculating as to why Hamas launched its deadly surprise attack when it did, the president said it was partially in order to derail normalization talks that his administration was championing.

“One of the reasons why they acted like they did, why Hamas moved on Israel, is because they knew I was about to sit down with the Saudis,” he said. “Because the Saudis wanted to recognize Israel, and that would, in fact, unite the Middle East.”

The logic was previously used by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking with CNN the day following Hamas’s attack.

He said that “it wouldn’t be a surprise that part of the motivation [for the attack] may have been to disrupt efforts to bring Saudi Arabia and Israel together.”

If delaying talks was truly one of the reasons why Hamas attacked, the attack may have worked — the Saudis froze the talks soon after the start of the war. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also took the unprecedented move of talking with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, formerly Saudi Arabia’s and Israel’s longtime rival. Saudi statements regarding the call appeared to paint Israel as the primary offender regarding atrocities toward civilians.
