An Arizona homeowner shot and killed two people trying to break into his home on Saturday morning, according to police.

An Arizona homeowner shot and killed two people trying to break into his home on Saturday morning, according to police.

Officers responded to 911 calls coming from a street on Phoenix around 7:45 a.m. and found two men with gunshot wounds on the ground in front of a home. Witnesses told police the shooter was inside the home next to where the men were lying, Sgt. Philip Krynsky of the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release given to the Washington Examiner.

“The officers were able to successfully carry the men to await paramedics,” Krynsky said. “The officers were able to communicate with the three occupants of the home and they were detained peacefully. The two men were taken to separate hospitals where they both died from their injuries.”

The men who were shot were identified by authorities as Jairo Perez, 20, and Jose Gutierrez, 24.

The people who were detained in connection to the shooting all gave consistent stories, claiming self-defense in regards to the shooting and that the two men forced their way into their home. They have since been released, and charges will be submitted for review, Krynsky said.

The names of the descendants have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
