The amount of benefits an eligible household receives depends on multiple factors, including household size, income limits, and additional assets. Most California households with a monthly gross income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level will qualify for SNAP. The maximum payment is $291 for a household of one, $973 for a household of four, and $1,751 for a household of eight. Up to $219 is added to a household’s food stamps for each member after eight.

SNAP payments are issued on an electronic benefits transfer card. The card can be used to buy grocery items at participating stores to buy eligible products such as meat and poultry, fruits, vegetables, bread, and drinks. SNAP cannot be used to purchase alcohol, cleaning supplies, or pet food.
