A date for the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has been announced.

The film will reportedly be released on Dec. 20, 2023.

The movie was initially teased at a Comicon screening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. “We wanted to make a movie that opened the universe to all kinds of stories,” filmmaker Jason Reitman said during the panel. “I want to see Ghostbusters movies from all of my favorite directors, and we hope that this movie sets the table for that.”

Then, on June 8, or “Ghostbusters Day” after the initial release date of the 1984 film, Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan reportedly confirmed the existence of a sequel, laying the foundation to announce a release date on Tuesday.

The 2021 film was packed with old and new household names such as Paul Rudd, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, J.K. Simmons, and more.

The movie was initially held by Sony when theaters closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, it was eventually released in Nov. 2021 and raked in more than $200 million worldwide.

The newest addition to the franchise will have to compete with Paramount’s The Tiger’s Apprentice and Warner Bros.’s The Color Purple, which are set for the same date. Other competition includes Paramount’s yet-to-be-titled Star Trek movie and Disney’s Rogue Squadron on Dec. 22.
