Nissan is recalling hundreds of thousands of Pathfinder SUVs over faulty latches that could cause the hood to open while driving.
The company is voluntarily recalling 322,671 vehicles manufactured from June 20, 2012, to July 27, 2016, according to a filing to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration earlier this month.

The problem is only present in approximately 0.44% of the vehicles being recalled and occurs when the “bell crank” is contaminated by dust and dirt and is improperly maintained and inspected, according to the company.
“In such cases where the bell crank lever remains in the open position, if the primary hood latch is inadvertently released or the hood is not closed properly after engine service, the secondary hood latch may not hold the hood closed as designed while the vehicle is in motion,” Nissan said in its filing. “If this condition occurs, the hood may open without warning and obstruct the driver’s forward view, increasing the risk of crash.”
Nissan noted in the recall notice that it will mail some Pathfinder owners information beginning this week, while others will receive the notification in August.
