Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is facing a civil lawsuit by a former aide who alleges he sexually harassed her while he was still in office, one of the same aides whose accusations led to his resignation in 2021.
The former Democratic governor’s ex-aide Brittany Commisso filed the lawsuit against him at the state Supreme Court in Albany on Wednesday. The filing comes as a special law, giving victims of sexual abuse a one-year window for claims that would otherwise exceed the statute of limitations, came to an end this week.

Commisso is just one of at least 11 women who accused Cuomo of sexual misconduct, leading to his sudden resignation in 2021 despite his continued denial of the accusations.
An attorney for Cuomo, Rita M. Glavin, strongly rebuked the most recent lawsuit levied against the former governor, calling it a “transparent attempt at a cash grab.”
“Ms. Commisso’s claims are provably false, which is why the Albany County District Attorney dismissed the case two years ago after a thorough investigation. Ms. Commisso’s transparent attempt at a cash grab will fail,” Glavin said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing her in court.”
The Adult Survivors Act is a time-sensitive law that paved the way for more than 2,500 lawsuits in the Empire State for victims of sexual abuse to file civil lawsuits against their alleged perpetrators long after the statute of limitations has expired. As the window to act on the law’s provisions is set to close, more lawsuits have been filed in recent days against celebrities such as Jamie Foxx and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Earlier this year, a New York jury found former President Donald Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll in the spring of 1996, awarding her $5 million for battery and defamation in a civil suit she brought under the law.
The Adult Survivors Act went into effect on Nov. 24, 2022, and is set to expire Friday evening by midnight.
