Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) claimed that it is “delusional” to believe President Joe Biden would be able to defeat former President Donald Trump in 2024 based on the current polls.
Phillips, a long shot Democratic presidential candidate, cited a Politico article discussing Biden’s sagging poll numbers against the former president as reason for why the president is not “positioned to defeat Donald Trump,” in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

As a member of House Democratic Leadership, I supported and promoted the Biden agenda.
I campaigned for him, voted for him, and respect him.
But how can anyone read this and conclude he’s positioned to defeat Donald Trump?
It’s delusional.https://t.co/iNdcFQmMH2

Biden has lagged behind Trump in recent polls pitting the two in a hypothetical 2024 election matchup, including in a slate of swing states according to a New York Times-Siena College poll from earlier this month.
The poll showed Trump leading Biden in five of six swing states just a year from the presidential election. The survey, taken from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3, shows Trump up 52% to 41% in Nevada, up 49% to 43% in Georgia, up 49% to 44% in Arizona, up 48% to 43% in Michigan, and up 48% to 44% in Pennsylvania. The poll showed Biden leading Trump 47% to 45% in Wisconsin.

Phillips garnered criticism from within the Democratic Party after citing Vice President Kamala Harris’s low approval ratings as reason “many think she’s not well positioned” to succeed Biden. He later apologized for his comments.
“In the Atlantic, I shared kind words about Harris because that’s been my personal experience and I respect her,” Phillips said on Thursday. “I shouldn’t have referenced other people’s opinions. I own that and apologize to her and everyone who’s been affected by similar circumstances.”
