Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed bans on biological men in women’s sports would see girls be subjected to “genital examinations” to verify their sex.
During a House Oversight subcommittee hearing on the “Importance of Protecting Female Athletics and Title IX,” the New York Democrat railed about “hearings of men attempting to restrict the rights of women and telling us it is for our own good.” She then invoked language originally included in an Ohio bill aiming to ban biological men from women’s sports, which stipulated they could go through “internal and external” exams to determine their eligibility.

“We are talking about opening up all women and girls to genital examinations when they are underage, potentially just because someone can point to someone and say, ‘I don’t think you are a girl,'” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She also discussed abortion and the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, claiming that abortion laws being proposed in states place women under more surveillance and that there are “privacy consequences for all women” with these proposals about transgender athletes and abortion.
“And we’re saying this in an environment of a post-Dobbs America, where states are criminalizing access to abortion and want nothing more than data on women to figure out when, who’s getting a menstrual cycle, who doesn’t have one, and we’re supposed to believe this is going to make us better and safer?” she added.

“I think not, and, per usual, I don’t believe we’re sitting here on a panel of men that has actually thought about the biology and privacy consequences of all women, trans or cisgendered,” she added.
The hearing on Tuesday featured testimony from former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, who had to compete against a biological male in the NCAA swimming championship in 2022.
