Californias Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which issues benefits to low-income households, will wrap up sending out benefits for the month of December in six days.

The SNAP program began issuing payments Friday — benefits are sent out from the first of the month through the 10th. Payments are distributed to qualified low-income households depending on recipients’ case numbers.

For example, California recipients with case numbers ending in one received their CalFresh benefits on Friday, Dec. 1, and those with case numbers ending in two received their benefits on Saturday, Dec. 2. The payment dates continue until Dec. 10, when those with case numbers ending in zero will receive their payments.

The exact benefit amount a household will receive depends on several factors, including household size, income limits, and additional assets. The maximum payment is $291 for a household of one, $973 for a household of four, and $1,751 for a household of eight. Up to $219 is added to a household’s food stamps for each member after eight.

SNAP benefits are loaded onto an electronic benefits transfer card every month. Recipients can use the card at grocery stores to purchase eligible food products such as fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, poultry, and drinks. They are barred, however, from using SNAP benefits for products such as pet food, alcohol, and household items such as paper and soap.
