Sports journalist Stephen A. Smith suggested Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) could step in to become the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, stating the United States needs “a new president.”

Smith’s comment comes as some people have expressed concern over President Joe Biden running for reelection next year, citing various problems, including his age and low polling numbers. Smith expressed concern about Biden’s age in an interview with OutKick, noting the president will turn 82 in 2024 and that “there’s no way around it.”

“Now, here’s where I’m going: I am in no way saying that me, myself, supports this move, but what makes sense if you are a flaming liberal, what makes sense is that Biden bows out, and Gavin Newsom takes the mantle and runs for the presidency against whoever the Republican nominee,” Smith said.

Smith said the Republican nominee is likely going to be former President Donald Trump, who is leading the Republican primary election for president. However, he expressed some doubt over Trump winning the nomination due to the 91 indictments he faces.

“But what I would tell you is that at the end of the day, this is what it comes down to,” Smith said. “In the end, it would be, to me, Trump vs. Gavin Newsom.”

Newsom has insisted he will not seek a last-minute run for the White House in 2024. Last week, the California governor joked during a debate with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) that neither would be the 2024 presidential nominees for their respective parties.

Smith is not the only celebrity to express concern over a Biden 2024 run. Radio host Charlamagne tha God also cited Biden’s age and approval rating among voters as negative factors to Biden’s reelection. He also joked that Biden not seeking reelection would be “the ultimate Christmas gift” for voters.
