Radio listeners who tuned in to a Vancouver, Canada, station were confused this past week as Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” played on repeat for hours.
KiSS Radio 104.9 FM played the rap-metal song for much of the day Wednesday after popular DJs Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu, along with several other staff members, were let go.
“KiSS is changing, and, unfortunately, we were informed that we won’t be part of this new chapter,” Lim and Sidhu said in their final broadcast Tuesday.
I was so confused when driving to work with RATM playing on repeat… I was angry that I wasn’t getting my morning fix of producer Jordan, Sonia and Kevin but I never for a sec thought you guys were being let go by Kiss!? Hoping to hear you all together on a different station?

Fans were not happy and reportedly began to speculate that the song, which was written to protest abuse of power following the 1991 Rodney King beating, may be related to an employee protesting the recent layoffs.
What the heck?? Did everyone get let go today? This is terrible all around

Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello took notice and retweeted one listener’s suggestion that the layoffs were the reason for the song’s continual play.
The radio station is reportedly switching formats, and the song was used as a means to signal the change.
