Florida voters will have the chance to change how school board elections in the state are conducted.
The Florida House of Representatives submitted HJR 31 to the Secretary of State in June, and voters are expected to vote on the issue in the general election in 2024. The resolution would change the state’s school board elections to be conducted in a partisan manner if passed.

HJR 31 is “a joint resolution proposing an amendment to Section 4 of Article IX and the creation of a new section in Article XII of the State Constitution to require members of a district school board to be elected in a partisan election,” according to the legislation.
The resolution went on to say that voters will decide on it in the next general election.
“In each school district there shall be a school board composed of five or more members chosen by vote of the electors in a partisan nonpartisan election for appropriately staggered terms of four years, as provided by law,” the resolution continued.
If voters give the resolution the green light, it will take effect in 2026.
The proposed change to the school board election guideline comes amid a plethora of controversy involving the state’s school boards.
School boards in Florida removed around 300 books from schools in the 2022-23 school year, according to NBC News, and the actions were prompted by over 1,200 objections from parents of students or residents of the state.
Included in the removed books were books that had LGBTQ themes or characters.
