President Joe Biden will not have any Democratic competitors in North Carolina‘s 2024 primary election, making him the only Democratic candidate for president in the state.
The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted 5-0 on Tuesday to honor the North Carolina Democratic Party’s request to have Biden alone on the ballot in the primary.

The election board’s exclusion of other candidates from the ballot included rejecting potential Democratic candidates Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), Marianne Williamson, and Cenk Uygur.
“In order to get on the ballot, you need to have donors in the state and be actively campaigning in the state,” North Carolina Democratic Party spokesman Tommy Mattocks reportedly said in December.
Following Tuesday’s decision, Williamson expressed disappointment and blamed the DNC.
“We are disappointed that the North Carolina Board of Elections abdicated their authority to protect North Carolina voters from the North Carolina Democratic State Party’s attempt to circumvent democracy,” she said in a statement.
Williamson added, “Their decision to protect political parties instead of voters is a failure to protect democracy itself. The North Carolina State Board of Elections has disgraced themselves and disgraced the voters of North Carolina. The crisis of Democracy in our nation is institutional.”
In her social media post, she blamed North Carolina for going “all in with the DNC.”
Democratic presidential hopeful Dean Phillips likened the decision to “Iran’s tactics.”
“Never imagined the Florida and North Carolina Democratic Parties would use Iran’s tactics to guarantee the outcome of an election,” Phillips wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“This year the Democratic Party decided an election wasn’t desirable – so they shafted voters by placing only Biden’s name on the ballot. The destruction of democracy by the people entrusted with protecting it,” he added in another social media post.
Young Turks host Uygur slammed the media for not covering how the Biden team has “tried to remove opponents from the ballots.”
“It’s remarkable that no one in media, including right-wing media, has noticed that the Biden team has now tried to remove opponents from the ballots in the primary and general election. Is anyone allowed to run against him?” Uygur said on Wednesday.
He continued, “Both Trump and I are being kept off the ballots because of misinterpretations of the 14th Amendment. I understand Republicans saying he should be on the ballot but not me. But there are also many Democrats who say let the Republican voters decide, but not the Democratic voters!”
Social media quickly responded to Uygur, telling him that he was disqualified from running because he is not a natural-born U.S. citizen, being born in Istanbul.
