DES MOINES, Iowa — President Joe Biden may not be competing in Iowa, but his campaign is on the ground in the first-in-the-nation state, trying to undermine the eventual Republican Party nominee.

While Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL), Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), and Biden campaign advisory board co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg previewed the likely coming general election between Biden and former President Donald Trump, Pritzker also undercut fellow Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) before Monday’s kickoff caucuses.

“Tonight’s contest is simply a question of whether you like your MAGA Trump agenda wrapped in the original packaging, or with high heels, or lifts in their boots,” Pritzker told reporters Monday in Des Moines, referring to DeSantis’s reported efforts to make himself taller. “The 2024 presidential election is one of the most critical contests this country will ever face. The anti-freedom, anti-democracy ideas that Donald Trump’s party stands for are the same whether it’s him or his ‘Mini Mes.’”

“No matter which version of the Trump MAGA agenda wins tonight — original, heels, or boots — the platform that they are fighting for will cause irreparable harm to this country,” he said. “The American people came together to reject this MAGA extremism in 2018, in 2020, in 2022, again in 2023, and they’ll do it again in 2024.”

The trio held a press conference hours after the Biden campaign announced the president and Vice President Kamala Harris raised more than $97 million during the last three months of 2023, with $117 million in cash on hand.

“Republicans are spending money on a race for the MAGA base without a single dime going towards the voters who will ultimately decide the general election,” Katzenberg added. “By the time they are finished with the primary and Donald Trump, or whichever extremist is finally in a position where they can start trying to compete with us, it’s just going to be too late.”

But Pritzker was simultaneously pressed on his state’s problems sheltering migrants during a once-in-a-decade weather event, which is additionally predicted to decrease turnout for the caucuses.

“They’re all sent by a Republican governor in Texas, who’s trying to sow chaos across the country and it’s all a political game on his part,” he said of Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. “It’s dangerous to send a busload of migrants who don’t have jackets, who don’t have shoes, proper shoes, to a climate like we’re in right now the way that the Republican governor from Texas is. And don’t forget the Republican Party stands with him in that endeavor.”
