A federal court has banned the sale of new Apple Watches in the United States on the grounds the blood oxygen trackers of the watches violate the intellectual property rights of the medical technology company Masimo.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled on Wednesday that it would reinstate its ban on selling the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. This will stop the company from selling any new models of the Series 9 and Ultra 2 in the U.S. because of the blood oxygen trackers.
Apple will now have to remove or disable the trackers from its latest watches if it wants to sell products in the U.S.
The International Trade Commission decided in October that the oxygen trackers on the Apple Watch copied patents owned by the medical technology company Masimo and gave the two companies until Dec. 26 to decide the matter between themselves or for the White House to veto the ITC decision.

Apple suspended sales of the watches a week before Christmas. The White House also declined to veto the ITC decision before the Dec. 26 deadline.
Apple filed an appeal on Dec. 27, a filing that resulted in a temporary hold on the ban until a longer one could be negotiated. As of Wednesday, that temporary ban has expired.
