House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said Sunday that there are still “so many” questions that remain unanswered about Gov. Tim Walz’s (D-MN) connections with China ahead of Election Day.
Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, had been monitored by the Department of Homeland Security “for many years” due to his many visits to China, according to Comer, who said this information was coming from a DHS whistleblower. Comer also noted that Walz did not have the financial backing to visit China as many times as he did, and that “all the boxes are checked” on the Oversight Committee and the DHS’s checklist for a U.S. official or their family member “being influenced by the Chinese Communist Party.”
“To have an American official that could be a heartbeat away from the presidency spend that much time in China, and speak favorably about China’s business model and how they’ve taken people out of poverty, I mean, every American citizen should be concerned,” Comer said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “And here we are, 48 hours before Election Day, and there are so many questions about Tim Walz and his relationship with the Chinese Communist Party that are unanswered.”
Comer noted how Walz has claimed he has traveled “at least 30 times” to China, and expressed frustration with how many “in the corporate media” have not properly looked into his connections to China.
As a result, Comer argued the House Oversight Committee needs to get to the bottom of why the DHS was concerned about Walz, whether it was in relation to a new report about his alleged romantic interest from China or favorable comments he made about the CCP. Comer added that the whistleblower has informed the Oversight Committee of classified and unclassified documents pertaining to the DHS’s concerns over Walz, but that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has “refused” to provide these documents.

When asked how House Republicans can hold Mayorkas accountable, Comer claimed “the only way” is for voters to vote for former President Donald Trump to install people who will “hold the people accountable for wrongdoing.” Mayorkas was previously impeached by the House in February 2024.
During the vice presidential debate last month, Walz admitted he has mischaracterized his past visits to China, previously claiming that he had been in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 despite reports revealing he had not traveled to Asia until after the protests. The governor acknowledged that he is a “knucklehead sometimes,” and that he “misspoke” about the matter.
