U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer voiced his confidence that China will eventually come to the negotiation table.

Following President Donald Trump tariffs against 86 countries, China was the only country to retaliate with tariffs on U.S. goods. Greer acknowledged this was “concerning.” Some 75 countries negotiated tariffs down to 10% before Trump issued a pause on most tariffs through July 9. However, tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China remain in effect.

“Part of the reason why we are in this spot originally is because China had decades of unfair trade practices. They limited our market access, and they took our jobs. They stole our technology,” Greer said on Fox News’s Ingraham Angle Monday. “And the president has been very clear that he is willing to talk to his counterpart and that he expects at some point we will have talks. We are not there yet. But that’s his exception, and I share that exception.”

China remains the outlier with a 145% tariff. China filed a lawsuit against the United States with the World Trade Organization over its initial 10% tariff. In an additional move to pressure the U.S., China issued tariffs on Canada. Most recently, China halted the exports of critical minerals to the U.S.

Many devices, such as laptops and smartphones, were exempted from tariffs, which was a slight relief to China as it manufactures most of the technology purchased by U.S. consumers. However, China is also affected by the 25% tariff against foreign automobiles.
