A complaint has been lodged with the Federal Election Commission, accusing a group aligned with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), which has spent millions in targeting Tim Sheehy, a Republican candidate vying for Montana’s Senate seat, of failing to file independent expenditure reports.

On Monday, the Americans for Public Trust filed an FEC complaint against the Last Best Place PAC, a shadowy entity behind a multimillion-dollar TV advertising campaign attacking Sheehy, who could be facing Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) in a challenge to Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT). Last Best Place PAC was registered in September and spent $5.7 million in broadcast and cable ads targeting Sheehy, a Gallatin County businessman and Navy veteran.

Last Best Place PAC brought in $2.1 million during the fourth quarter of 2023, according to FEC reports. The group’s funding came from Majority Forward, which is linked with Senate Majority PAC — the Senate Democrats’ main super PAC.

APT’s complaint said the Last Best Place PAC failed to follow FEC requirements by not reporting independent expenditures showing this activity. The PAC has spent more than $10,000 in advertising last year, but failed to file 48-hour reports to the FEC, according to the complaint.

“Last Best Place PAC is masquerading as a local Montana operation while quietly laundering millions of dollars from DC liberals,” APT Executive Director Caitlin Sutherland said in a statement. “Spending massive sums of money to impact this election without filing the legally required reports flies in the face of the letter and spirit of our election laws. This behavior warrants an immediate investigation by the FEC in order to uphold the basic standards of transparency and public trust.”

The complaint accuses the Last Best Place PAC of “failing to meet the legal requirements and basic standards of transparency to which every other independent expenditure committee is required to adhere.”

When the group’s connection to Democrats was confirmed, a Sheehy spokesperson told Fox News, “The career politicians back in DC are terrified of conservative outsider Tim Sheehy because he’s going to stand shoulder to shoulder with President Trump to drain the swamp, save our country, and put America and Montana First!”

The Washington Examiner reached out to the PAC, Schumer’s office, and Sheehy’s campaign for comment.
