Eleven people are dead and over 40 are injured after a truck crashed into a bar in the Dominican Republic early Sunday.

The crash occurred in the city of Azua, which is located in the southern part of the Dominican Republic, according to the Associated Press.

The cause of the crash is unclear, but authorities are reviewing cameras in the area. Police spokesman Diego Pesqueira said a police sergeant died in the crash.

Pesqueira added that the driver of the truck fled the scene, but a passenger was taken into custody. The truck was transporting avocados.

Most of the injured are women between the ages of 17 and 45 and men between the ages of 18 and 55. Four of the injured are in critical condition.

The Dominican Republic is a popular tourist destination known for its beaches. In 2023, the Caribbean country attracted more than 10 million tourists, according to Travelweek.
