A former Trump administration official who was shot during a carjacking Monday in Washington died of his injuries at 56 on Saturday, his wife said.
Mike Gill, who served as chief of staff for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during the Trump administration, sustained life-threatening injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department, and was taken to a local hospital.
“It is with profound sadness that I wish to inform the community of the passing of my husband, Mike Gill,” Kristina Gill, his wife, said in a statement Saturday.
“His sudden departure has left a void in our lives that can never be filled,” she continued. “In this time of grief, we are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from family, friends, and the community, and extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out to offer condolences and assistance.”
The carjacking occurred Monday evening at the intersection of 9th and K Streets in the district’s Northwest quadrant. The suspect, Artell Cunningham, 28, of Suitland, Maryland, allegedly got inside the parked car and shot Gill, who was in the driver’s seat.

Police say Cunningham fled on foot and committed or attempted to commit at least four more carjackings in D.C. and suburban Maryland over the next 11 hours. Police fatally shot him early Tuesday in New Carrollton, Maryland, according to the state attorney general’s office.
Gill is the second person to die in the aftermath of Cunningham’s rampage. The suspect also fatally shot Alberto Vasquez Jr., 35, on Monday night at the intersection of 3rd and N Streets in the district’s Northeast quadrant.
