A man was pushed onto subway tracks in New York City on New Year’s Eve as a train approached but survived his brush with death.
The man is in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital but suffered broken ribs and a fractured skull.
A video of the incident shows a man standing close to the edge of the subway platform before another man approached the victim and shoved him in front of the 1 Train just after 1:30 Tuesday afternoon at the city’s 18th Street.
The suspect in the crime has been caught and identified as 23-year-old Kamel Hawkins of Brooklyn.
Hawkins is being charged with attempted murder and felony assault. He is being held by police and is due in court on Jan. 6. He has nine prior arrests including other violent offenses. In October of last year, he was charged with assault, harassment, and weapons possession. In June 2019, he was charged with the assault of a New York City police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and disorderly conduct.
A witness told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that she got a “weird vibe” from the man.
“I actually got a very weird vibe from him. I don’t know if it was the way he dressed. He had a face mask on. He had his hood up, made eye contact with him, just got a very weird vibe. So I just immediately sat down on the bench,” she said.
She called 911 after the incident occurred.
“I just panicked even just telling this story now I’m just starting to shake,” she said.

New York City and its mayor, Eric Adams, have been heavily criticized for several notable recent crimes taking place within its underground train network. Most notably, a woman was allegedly set on fire by an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala in December. She died from her injuries.
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) asserted earlier in December that “crime is going down” in the subways despite some recent incidents. There are about 1,000 New York National Guard troops protecting subways in the city.
