A U.S. Secret Service agent was robbed during President Joe Biden’s visit to California, according to authorities.
The robbery occurred on Saturday night in Tustin, a city within the metropolitan area of Los Angeles. The agent was returning from a work assignment at around 9:30 p.m. when the robbery occurred, according to the Secret Service. After the agent’s bag was stolen, he fired his gun at the assailant, but it’s unknown if they were hit.
“A member of the U.S. Secret Service was the victim of an armed robbery in Tustin, California late Saturday when returning from a work assignment,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, told the Washington Examiner in a statement. “The employee discharged their service weapon during the incident but unknown if the assailants were struck. We are thankful that the employee did not sustain any injuries.”
The Tustin Police Department is undertaking a criminal investigation on the matter.
“The suspect(s) were not located and it is unknown at this time whether the suspect(s) were injured as a result of the incident,” Tustin Police Lt. Patt Nunley said in a statement. “Officers have located some of the victim’s belongings in the area and the incident is still being investigated. There is no known threat to the public.”
An image of the suspected vehicle used by the assailant, a 2004-2006 silver Infiniti FX35, was released.
Critics were quick to blame the incident on the crime policies of President Joe Biden and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
