Three people were killed and two police officers were wounded in a shooting at a northern Indiana grocery store.

One of those killed shot at the police and is assumed to be the shooter. The other two deceased were pronounced dead at the scene. The two injured police officers were hospitalized and are in stable condition.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected,” Jessica McBrier, public information officer for the Elkhart Police Department, said. “It’s a sad day in Elkhart.”

She urged patience as the investigation was carried out and stressed that there was no longer a threat to the public.

The shooting was reported at around 5:15 p.m. Eastern.

Erin Swary, who was doing her grocery shopping at the time, was a witness to the shooting.

“I did my grocery shopping and was checking out, and I was the only one at the particular checkout. There were people over at self-checkout. I didn’t really pay much attention to them. I was just watching my bill go up and just making small talk with the bagger. And then we heard a pop. And honestly, I thought it was a balloon that popped,” she told WNDU in an interview.

Swary reported six to eight shots in rapid succession, sending the other shoppers fleeing away from the shooter. She ran back to a stock room for shelter.

Swary, who is pregnant, said the police response was nearly “instant.” She saw police chasing someone before she could call 911.

The tragedy marks a violent 24 hours in the city, as Elkhart police were already dealing with the deadly shooting of an 18-year-old on Sunday night.
