Mexican soldiers killed 12 gunmen in a shootout near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said Monday.
A security spokesperson for the Mexican state of Tamaulipas explained that members of the Secretariat of National Defense were attacked by armed civilians in Miguel Aleman, a township across the border from Roma, Texas.
The spokesperson said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the 12 gunmen were killed and that 12 long guns with ammunition were seized by authorities.
Mexican government sources told the AFP that drug cartel members were among those killed by soldiers, also saying the military used drones and a helicopter in the shootout.
Tamaulipas is located in the northeastern corner of Mexico, bordering Texas from the Gulf of Mexico to roughly 200 miles inland along the Rio Grande.

Crime and disputes between cartels have occurred in Miguel Aleman for years, according to the Associated Press. In September 2023, a gunman fired at vehicles entering the town from the United States, with citizens of both countries injured in the incident.
This recent shooting occurred as Congress debates extra provisions for border security along the U.S.-Mexico border after a bipartisan deal negotiated by the Senate fell apart.
