President Donald Trump declared on Sunday morning that the United States doesn’t “need anything” from Canada as Canadian officials vocally oppose the president’s new tariffs against the northern country.
“We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Why? There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country.”

On Saturday, Trump announced he was implementing a 25% tax on all goods from Mexico and Canada, with a 10% tariff on energy.
Trump’s Truth Social post this morning comes the same day Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman argued during an appearance on ABC News’s This Week that the U.S. is heavily reliant on Canada for energy.
“We provide the United States with almost all of the hydro and about a third of the oil that you import and use, so 80% of the oil that you import and use, but almost all of the electricity,” Hillman said “So, let’s do more, right? This is our view. A third of your Uranium comes from Canada.”
Hillman said she remained hopeful that Trump valued its trade relations with Canada despite his most recent tariff.
“We are keen to continue to sell those into the United States, and to to work, to even do more, but it’s hard to maintain that sense of common purpose and moving forward, if we get into this kind of a dynamic on tariffs,” Hillman said.
Meanwhile, former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who is a contender to replace Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, slammed Trump’s orders as a “betrayal.”
“This action is utter madness,” Freeland said during an appearance on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS. “It is a betrayal of America’s closest friend — your ally, your neighbor, your best partner in the whole world. It is an act of economic warfare.”

In his post so social media, Trump also reiterated talks of annexing Canada.
“Canada should become our Cherished 51st State,” Trump wrote. “Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!”
