Democratic strategist James Carville predicted that the swing states in the 2024 election will nearly all go to one candidate, rather than either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly winning the majority of them.

Speaking on CNN, Carville was asked, “If it’s the economy, stupid,” why Harris isn’t ahead in the presidential race after recent positive economic news, including declining inflation and a stronger-than-expected jobs report.

“You know, she’s slightly ahead. It’s not the election. These things tend to break one way or the other at the end. There’s seven swing states. The least likely result is they break 4-3. But I can’t stop the commentariat from saying it’s going to be neck-and-neck and it’s going to come down to this. I think it will break at the end. I think someone will carry swing states 5-2 or 6-1. … But this thing is a long way from decided,” he said.

Carville was then asked if Harris has been “playing it too safe,” to which he mocked those who say she doesn’t have a “specific” policy agenda.

“I just heard all of this whining about long-form interviews and ‘you don’t have a specific plan.’ She’s got an 81-page economic plan. She’s agreed to do 60 minutes, which is the ultimate long-form interview show. Of course, Donald Trump weasels out of the next debate, weasels out of 60 minutes. … What garbage,” he said.

Carville was referencing Trump backing out of a 60 Minutes special airing on Oct. 7 that was set to feature both him and Harris. Now, the hourlong show will feature only Harris.

Carville did acknowledge, however, that the public does not know “what” Harris is yet and said that she needs to “fill herself out.”

Recent polling from RealClearPolitics in seven swing states shows Trump and Harris both leading in three states each, while tied in Pennsylvania. Trump leads in Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. Harris is ahead in Nevada, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
