Hours after the 2024 election was called for Trump, two protesters, aged 25 and 72, in Just Stop Oil T-shirts spray painted the wall of the embassy in a show that they “reject fascism.” London Metropolitan Police arrested both of them.

“This morning the world wakes to find it has slipped further into fascism as well as climate breakdown. Trump’s win puts the lives of ordinary people at risk, everywhere,” the group wrote of the protest online. “Political systems that can be bought by big oil have no value as we face the biggest challenge of our time. The only real winner of today’s election is the corporate power that controls the major parties in both the US and UK.”

Among Trump’s top ten donors was Energy Transfer LP, a company that deals in oil and natural gas, which donated over $10 million. However, Vice President Kamala Harris was the second-highest recipient of donations from gas and oil companies, according to OpenSecrets.org.

Harris received over $1.4 million from such interest groups, which is more than even Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who kept his seat Tuesday. Cruz’s state of Texas is the country’s largest oil producer.

The United States’s reliance on foreign energy was a top concern during this most recent cycle. During the only debate between the two candidates, Harris bragged that her administration with President Joe Biden oversaw “the largest increase in domestic oil production in history because of an approach that recognizes that we cannot over-rely on foreign oil,” a moment that marked a shift in her tone on the topic of clean energy.
