A Member of the European Parliament thinks the U.S. should return the Statue of Liberty to France.

Raphael Glucksmann, a socialist and member of France’s left-wing Place Publique party, made the demand while delivering a speech during his party’s convention, according to reports. He accused the U.S. of siding with tyrants, claiming that doing so goes against the spirit of the Statue of Liberty. As such, he believes the country has changed its values and is no longer worthy of the monument.

“Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” said Glucksmann. “We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty.’”

Glucksmann’s comments appear to be in response to the Trump administration’s recent actions regarding Ukraine, which starkly contrasts with the Biden administration. He accused the U.S. of despising the monument gifted by France to the U.S. in 1886 to commemorate the alliance between the two countries during the American Revolution.

“‘We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,’” the MEP said.

Glucksmann took his criticism of Trump even further by scolding the president for the mass layoffs he has ordered since beginning his second term. The French politician stated that his country would welcome any American who lost their job and wanted to leave.

“The second thing we’re going to say to the Americans is: ‘If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world’s leading power, then we’re going to welcome them,” Glucksmann said.

TRACKING WHAT DOGE IS DOING ACROSS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Glucksmann did not mention that the basis for Trump’s layoffs was to eliminate reckless government spending, waste, and fraud.

Neither Trump nor anyone in his administration has yet to publicly acknowledge Glucksmann’s comments or issue a response.
