Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) encouraged Republicans to allow the election process to “play out” for the GOP presidential nominee in order to prevent further division within the party.
While appearing on This Week, Kemp made his suggestion in response to being asked about some people within the Republican Party asking 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley to suspend her campaign. The calls for Haley to drop out come after she lost to former President Donald Trump in both the New Hampshire primary, the Iowa caucuses, and the Virgin Islands caucuses, along with losing to the “none of these candidates” label in the Nevada primary.
“I think you need to let the process play out,” Kemp said. “I think voters want to have their say. At the end of the day, that’s the way the process started, and that’s the way it should end.”
Kemp, a critic of Trump and his claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, encouraged both the former president and Haley to continue to compete in the primary race. He added that the calls to “circumvent” the primary race would only anger voters who wish to have a voice in the voting process and prevent the party from coming together to defeat President Joe Biden in November.
“Because that is something most Americans agree on, that he is asleep at the wheel and we need a change in the White House,” Kemp said of Biden.

The Republican Party’s next primary election will be held on Feb. 24 in South Carolina, Haley’s home state. Ahead of the election, Haley has sent moving billboards poking fun at Trump and Biden’s old age with a billboard campaign called “Grumpy Old Men.”
Trump, meanwhile, held a rally in South Carolina Saturday, calling Biden “grossly incompetent.” He also joked that he did not face “much competition” from within the Republican primary race when looking at the election results from primaries and caucuses held so far.
