Former President Donald Trump may be the decisive factor in determining who wins the deep-blue California Senate seat.

Schiff, 63, emerged during the Trump administration as one of the former president’s fiercest critics, spearheading the first impeachment effort and serving on the Jan. 6 committee. Now, his high-profile fight with Trump looks poised to hand him a victory in California’s Tuesday primary, effectively handing him the state’s Senate seat vacated by former Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).

Schiff’s two major opponents are Reps. Katie Porter (D-CA) and Barbara Lee (D-CA), both of whom were expected to lead the race due to being women, and Lee being black. Despite this, Schiff, a white man, may emerge triumphant, largely due to the public resurgence of Trump.

“Trump’s shadow has loomed large over this Senate race,” anti-Trump Republican strategist Mike Madrid told Politico. “Trump determined the Democrat to emerge from the primary when he attacked Schiff. At that moment, Schiff became the tip of the spear in Trump opposition, and more than anything else, that’s what Democratic primary voters are looking for.”

Schiff, once seen as a Blue Dog Democratic centrist, reinvented himself over the Trump years, leading to a national presence that helped him raise $32 million for the Senate race. This total is more than twice that of the nearest competition.
