House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said President Donald Trump should stop issuing “threats” against the United States’ allies on Sunday.
Trump has slammed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in recent weeks due to his belief that the alliance has failed to effectively target Iran along with the U.S. and secure the Strait of Hormuz. The president has also said it is “beyond reconsideration” on whether he would reconsider the U.S. membership of NATO.
Jeffries said he hopes there will be a “bipartisan effort” to convince the Trump administration not to engage in a “reckless choice” by withdrawing from NATO.
“This is a dangerous world. We need more friends, not more adversaries. And we should not walk away from an alliance that has actually kept the world and the United States as safe as possible in the aftermath of World War II,” Jeffries said on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos. “And the president should stop issuing these threats and attacking our allies while coddling up to people like Vladimir Putin and Russia, which is a sworn enemy of the United States of America. He‘s got our priorities in terms of our friends and our adversaries all wrong.”
Anchor George Stephanopoulos also asked Jeffries about the Congressional Democrats’ unpopularity with voters, noting it’s almost on par with Trump’s. Jeffries argued that his party has been winning various elections over the last 15 months, including a Democratic flip in a Florida district where Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort resides.
Jeffries added that Democrats “understand” that voters want to see “action” on the cost of living. He said his party will continue to “forcefully push back against the extremism” while convincing voters that Democrats will bring about “necessary” changes.

Trump’s war with Iran and bid to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is putting pressure on U.S. gas prices, which have surged since the conflict’s beginning in late February. Prices continuing to rise could seriously harm Trump and the Republican Party’s bid to keep the majority in Congress this November.
Trump said that Tuesday will mark “Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day,” and demanded that the Iranian regime reopen the Strait of Hormuz. If it isn’t reopened, he warned, the regime will be “living in Hell.”
