Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) promised that one House committee will investigate Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg this month.
Johnson appeared on Fox News Sunday less than two weeks before the House Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government will hear testimony from Bragg. This hearing, slated for June 13, comes on the heels of Bragg winning his criminal case against former President Donald Trump, who was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
“And the purpose of the hearing is to investigate what these prosecutors are doing at the state and federal level to use politics, you know political retribution, in the court system to go after political opponents of federal officials like Donald Trump. That’s a really important thing for us to delve into,” Johnson said. “And we’re going to look at special counsel Jack Smith, who we believe is abusing his authority as well.”
The reference to Smith was in regard to his election subversion case against the former president. Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges surrounding his handling of classified documents following his presidential term.
Even though Trump lost his trial in New York, it has correlated with increased financial support for the Republican presidential candidate. The Trump campaign raised $1.5 million after the first day in court and then doubled that amount three days later, with more donations adding up to $76 million raised in April alone. Within the first 24 hours following the verdict, Trump’s campaign raised $52.8 million.

Trump himself has not shown any signs of stopping his 2024 campaign. Instead, he promised supporters outside of the courthouse that he is still “fighting for our country.”
Judge Juan Merchan is scheduled to sentence Trump on July 11, right before the Republican National Convention, where the former president will presumably be named the party’s presidential nominee.
