Former President Donald Trump paid a touching tribute to Corey Comperatore, the man who was shot and killed during the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.

Comperatore’s firefighting helmet and protective coat were displayed onstage behind Trump as the former president gave his speech. Trump honored Comperatore’s heroism and commended his bravery.

“Tragically, the shooter claimed the life of one of our fellow Americans, Corey Comperatore, unbelievable person, everybody tells me,” Trump said. “He was incredible. He was a highly respected former fire chief,” Trump said.

Trump then recalled Comperatore throwing himself on top of his family to protect them from the gunshots.

“He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect them from flying bullets,” Trump said. “He went right over the top of them and was hit. What a fine man he was.”

Trump approached Comperatore’s gear, embraced it, and kissed his helmet. He then asked for everyone to pay respect to Comperatore with a moment of silence.

He also acknowledged and paid respect to the two other rally attendees who were shot and injured, David Dutch and James Copenhaver.

The former president also announced on the stage that more than $6 million had been raised for the families of the victims at the rally. Additionally, Trump pulled a check from his chest pocket in his suit and announced that a donor had also contributed a check for $1 million.
