In a victory for New York Attorney General Letitia James, former President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization were ordered to pay over $350 million in damages by Judge Arthur Engoron.
James celebrated Friday’s ruling against Trump and his sons Eric and Donald Jr. in the New York civil fraud case.
“Justice has been served,” James said during a press conference following the ruling. “Today, we prove that no one is above the law, no matter how rich, powerful or politically connected you are, everyone must play by the same rules”
“For years, Donald Trump engaged in deceptive business practices and tremendous fraud. Donald Trump falsely, knowingly, inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to unjustly enrich himself, his family and to cheat the system,” James said.
“Donald Trump may have authored the Art of the Deal, but he perfected the art of the steal today,” James added, referring to Trump’s 1987 book with journalist Tony Schwartz.
James first filed the suit against Trump in September 2022, and the former president has repeatedly attacked the attorney general and criticized Engoron throughout the trial. Trump has claimed the trial politically targeted him because he’s running for reelection, an argument the former president has used in several of the criminal cases against him.
