President-elect Donald Trump chose Joseph Nocella to be the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

Nocella, a Columbia Law School graduate, was appointed Nassau County District Court judge in 2022. He was previously the assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 1991 to 1995.

“Judge Nocella has a strong record of bringing Law and Order to the incredible people of New York, serving as a Nassau County District Court Judge, and Family Court Judge,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

The district covers eight million people across Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island.

The current attorney, Breon Peace, announced last month that he would step down from the position on Jan. 10.

“As I leave the Office, I will always be grateful for the extraordinary work we have done together in furthering our mission, doing the right thing always and in achieving justice with honor and integrity,” he said in his departure statement. “And, I look forward to the Office’s continued courageous commitment to pursuing justice, fairly and ethically, without bias, without fear or favor, and with compassion and empathy for our fellow human beings.”

Former New York Rep. Anthony D’Esposito praised Trump’s pick as an “excellent choice.”

“Joe Nocella is a tough prosecutor and a man of integrity who will hold criminals accountable, protect those he serves and never allow the weaponization of his office,” he said.
