Gas prices decreased again on Wednesday, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas coming in at $3.398, according to AAA. This was a slight decrease from Tuesday’s price of $3.404 per gallon. It is the first time the average cost for a gallon of gas in the country has been under $3.40 in months.

Gas prices remain a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, will have to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices dipped again in the nation’s capital on Wednesday, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas coming in at $3.65. This was a slight drop from Tuesday’s cost of $3.658 per gallon. A week ago, gas in the District was $3.68 per gallon and a month ago it was $3.706.

Virginia

The average price for a gallon of regular gas also dropped in Virginia on Wednesday, coming in at $3.274. This was a slight drop from Tuesday’s price of $3.283. Both prices are cheaper than from a week ago, when it cost $3.336 per gallon and a month ago, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.421.

Maryland

Maryland also experienced a drop in gas prices on Wednesday with the average price for a gallon of regular gas dropping to $3.359. This was a slight decrease from Tuesday’s cost of $3.366. A week ago, gas was more expensive in the state when the average price for a gallon of regular cost $3.426. A month ago, it was even costlier, with a price of $3.498 per gallon.

Delaware

Delaware has the cheapest gas prices in the region and continued that trend with another drop in the average price of regular gas on Wednesday, coming in at $3.277. This was a drop from Tuesday’s cost of $3.283 per gallon. Prices are also cheaper than a week ago when it cost $3.352 per gallon and a month ago, when it cost $3.417 for a gallon of regular gas.

Illinois

Illinois is a midwestern state that is not located anywhere near Washington, D.C., however it is the state that is currently hosting the Democratic National Convention. The prices of gas in Illinois is significantly more expensive than any gas price in the states around the nation’s capital. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Illinois on Wednesday is $3.754. This was a slight drop from Tuesday’s price of $3.774. A week ago, gas in the state was $3.865. A month ago, gas was even more expensive, hovering around $4 a gallon, coming in with a price of $3.946 for a gallon of regular gas.

Hawaii

Hawaii may be known as paradise but the gas prices in the state are anything but a joy for drivers in the state. The Aloha State has the most expensive gas in the nation, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas costing Hawaiians $4.654 per gallon on Wednesday. A week ago, regular gas cost $4.667 per gallon and a month ago, it was $4.681.

Mississippi

Mississippi continues its trend of being the most affordable gas in the nation. On Wednesday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is $2.939. This was a drop from a week ago when it was $2.965 per gallon and a month ago when it cost slightly under $3 a gallon for regular gas, coming in at $2.992.
