Gas prices in the country continue to drop, marking over a week straight in which the average cost for a gallon of regular gas has dropped. It would be unfair to characterize the decreases over this period as substantial, however, they were decreases nevertheless.  

On Monday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the country was $3.472, according to AAA. This was a slight decrease from Sunday, when it cost $3.474 for a gallon of regular gas. Prices are cheaper now than they were a month ago, when the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.514, a decrease of slightly more than four cents over the last 30 days. 

Gas prices remain an important issue heading into the 2024 presidential election. With Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the likely Democratic nominee, will have to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, prices have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Washington, D.C.

On Monday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the nation’s capital on Monday was $3.688. This was a decrease from the day prior when the cost was $3.693. Regular gas is less expensive in Washington, D.C., than a week ago, when the average price was $3.712 per gallon. Prices are also less expensive now than a month ago, when drivers in the district paid $3.711 per gallon.

Virginia

In Virginia, the average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas on Monday was $3.32. This decreased from the day before when it cost $3.328 per gallon. Gas prices are also less expensive in the state than a week ago, when regular-grade gas was $3.386 per gallon. Prices are also less expensive now compared to a month ago, when the price for a gallon of regular was $3.383.

Delaware

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Delaware on Monday was $3.293. This was a decrease from the Sunday’s price of $3.302. Additionally, gas prices in Delaware are cheaper than a week ago when the average cost was $3.383. There was a sizable drop in gas prices from a month ago when drivers in the First State paid $3.454 for a gallon of regular gas.

Maryland

On Monday the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Maryland cost $3.399. This marked a drop in cost from a day earlier when the price of regular gas averaged $3.41 per gallon. However, a week ago, gas prices in Maryland were more expensive, costing drivers in Maryland $3.475 per gallon at the pumps. Prices are also lower today than a month ago when people in Maryland paid $3.571 for a gallon of regular gas.
