Gas prices have once again decreased throughout the nation as the average cost for a gallon of regular gas dropped to $3.216 on Monday, according to AAA. Despite the drop, the price of gas is still slightly more expensive than a week ago, when regular gas was $3.208 per gallon.

Gas prices remain a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

Despite the recent trend of decreases, gas prices have fluctuated throughout the year and vary significantly among states. Overall, gas prices remain higher than when Trump was in office. Delaware

The price of gas is soaring in Delaware on Monday, with a gallon of regular gas now averaging $3.193. This is a jump of greater than 20 cents per gallon in a week. The First State used to be the least expensive in the Delmarva region, but recent increases have changed that. After weeks of decreases throughout the state, Monday’s gas prices are now higher than the cost of a gallon of regular gas a month ago in Delaware when it was $3.168.

Maryland

Gas prices were also on the rise in Maryland on Monday. Regular gas now costs residents $3.247 per gallon, nearly 18 cents per gallon higher than a week ago, when it was $3.068. Weeks of falling prices in the state were negated by the increases in gas costs the last few days. Regular gas on Monday cost almost as much as it did a month ago in the state, when it was $3.269 per gallon.

Virginia

Gas prices in Virginia decreased on Monday, with the average price for a gallon of gas falling to $3.006. This was a slight decrease from the weekend when regular gas cost Virginia residents $3.01 per gallon. Monday’s prices, however, were more expensive than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas was $2.983. Despite the recent increase, prices in the state remain cheaper than a month ago when it cost $3.219 per gallon for regular gas.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices also continued to fall in Washington, D.C., on Monday with a gallon of regular gas now costing residents $3.304. This drop continues the recent trend of decreases in the state. Yesterday, a gallon of regular gas was $3.312 and a week ago, regular gas cost $3.344 per gallon. And, compared to a month ago, the cost is much less expensive considering that the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the nation’s capital was $3.588.

Mississippi

Mississippi remains the state with the least expensive gas prices in the nation, costing $2.682 per gallon for regular gas. Prices have continued to fall in the state over the last week. On Sunday, regular gas was $2.692 per gallon. A week ago, regular gas cost $2.702 per gallon. Prices are also much less expensive than a month ago when regular gas cost $2.878 per gallon for Mississippi drivers.

California

California is the state with the most expensive gas prices in the nation on Monday, with a price of $4.692 per gallon for regular gas. Despite having the highest costs in the nation, Monday’s price was actually a slight decrease from yesterday’s price of $4.695 per gallon. However, gas prices have fluctuated quite a bit in the Golden State in recent weeks. A week ago, it cost $4.742 for a gallon of gas in the state, but a month ago, regular gas was cheaper than Thursday’s price, when it cost residents only $4.634 per gallon.
