Tesla is recalling more than 46,000 Cybertrucks after an issue was discovered with the exterior trim potentially detaching and becoming a hazard.
The recall is the latest for the automaker, which already had two other recalls this year and a significant recall pertaining to the autopilot feature in December affecting cars spanning 12 years of production.
In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this week, Tesla said that the “cant rail, a stainless-steel exterior trim panel, can delaminate and detach from the vehicle” and warned that they can “become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.” Tesla said in a different filing that the defect can detected by the panel creating a “detectable noise inside the cabin.”
The recall affects 46,096 Cybertrucks manufactured from Nov. 13, 2023, to Feb. 27, 2025.
The defect was first discovered in January, per the NHTSA filing, after a routine monitoring of field repairs” and decided to call for the voluntary recall on March 11 following an investigation.
Tesla said they will replace the cant rail assembly for free for affected vehicles, and will notify owners via a letter to be mailed May 19.
MUSK OUTRAGED AFTER MASSIVE ARSON ATTACK ON TESLA SERVICE CENTER: ‘TERRORISM’
The recall comes as the automaker is in the headlines for its CEO, Elon Musk, and his role in the Trump administration. Tesla has become the target of boycotts, protests, and some attacks, over opposition to Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency.
On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced charges against three people for vandalism charges related to a fiery protest at a Tesla dealership in South Carolina. Bondi warned people that if they “join this wave of domestic terrorism against Tesla properties, the Department of Justice will put you behind bars.”
