CNN is wrapping up 2024 with its smallest audience in its history, despite the historic political year it ended up being.
From Dec. 26, 2023, through Dec. 15, 2024, CNN only garnered 93,000 viewers in the key age demographic of 25 to 54-year-olds. Across all viewers, the network netted 488,000 viewers, trailing rival network Fox News, which got 1.46 million viewers, according to data from Nielsen Media Research.
The released data comes after it was revealed last month that CNN’s coverage of election night garnered 5.1 million viewers, a 44% decrease from the 2020 election. In comparison, Fox News netted 13.6 million viewers in its election night coverage.
Meanwhile, fellow news network MSNBC fell behind CNN in viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, drawing 86,000 viewers. However, the network managed to get 806,000 viewers among all demographics.
On Thursday, it was reported that MSNBC requested both network anchors Joy Reid and Stephanie Ruhle take a pay cut in order to retain their seats as anchor hosts. It comes after fellow anchor Rachel Maddow was slashed by $5 million, according to a report.
NewsNation, which has yet to attain the name recognition of networks like CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC, gained traction in 2024 by gaining an extra 25% in primetime cable viewership. Additionally, it also gained 45% in viewership between the ages of 25 and 54.
